Welcome to my head!
I grew up in the era of pinball machines. I didn’t play them often – they usually weren’t located where I hung out, but when I did, I loved to release the shooter, hoping the shiny, silver ball would sound all sorts of bells and whistles, scoring more and more points. I’d activate the flippers to extend the game and add some good old fashioned body English that my older brother taught me, but eventually, the ball would roll to the inner recesses of the machine, and that round was over.
Well, I’m convinced my brain functions much like a mini-pinball machine. When engaged each morning, thoughts and ideas begin crashing and clanging off the inner recesses of my head. Some are great, sounding internal shouts and sirens that require action; others are duds and roll quietly away (usually, and hopefully). Each morning, more are ready to be sprung forward.
I love writing as a creative expression, as a therapeutic outlet and as an avenue for storytelling, and it helps me capture some of the thoughts and ideas that last more than a day or two. I enjoy taking readers with me when I travel, whether on the savannas of Africa, or the hills of Kentucky; I am constantly finding humor, as an active participant in the aging process. But most of all, it’s what I see when I live on the sidelines that inspires me, causes me to ponder, and quite honestly, gives me a good chuckle.
But why blog? Selfishly, it’s my motivation to dust off my writing skills, sharpen my powers of observation, and translate what I see and hear into something that is entertaining and enjoyable to the reader. It’s my approach to lifelong learning, just as others might take a class in painting or learn a foreign language. My friend, Adrian, helped me connect the dots many years ago between an active, engaged mind and quality of life.
In addition to writing, I love quilting; what could be more rewarding than cutting up fabric only to sew it back together again. My life has been and continues to be a journey filled with family and friends, work and service, travel and hobbies – all patches in my personal crazy quilt of life.
So, I hope you find some enjoyment and come back to visit. I’ll post again in a couple of days, and then, my goal is to post every week, but sometimes, life has other ideas. Please consider subscribing or signing up so every post will hit your mailbox – it’s like your own personal delivery service but without a tip required! And please share with others. Along the way, I’ll introduce you to friends and family members who make my journey even more fun and worthwhile.
Many thanks to Mary, Kathy, Sue, Itura, Michelle and Maryann who have given me advice along the way as I made the decision to bare my soul through the intimate world of the internet. And huge kudos to Lori, my tech guru, for providing that platform.
Seriously, it is estimated that there are more than 200 million blogs. What more can possibly be said? I guess we’ll find out.
