The last Mother’s Day I had with my mother was 1980. If she were with me today, I’d say thanks for…
- taking me the see Julius Caesar at the Guthrie Theater when I was 14.
- not laughing when I would play Shoe Store on snow days, and letting me fill the living room floor with every single pair of shoes in the house.
- growing the most beautiful iris in town.
- making me help with ironing. It’s not over-rated and I still start with the collar.
- teaching me to make change when I hung out at your fabric store in grade school.
- making me think tater-tot hot dish was gourmet cooking.
- helping me get my first library card.
- ignoring my pitiful demands for refusing anything less than matching towel sets for college.
- serving milk in a ceramic pitcher every night at dinner.
- forgiving me when I wouldn’t go to hear The Vienna Boys Choir with you.
- defending me against my brother’s wet dish towel snaps on our nights of dish duty.
- treating me to fashion shows at Gimbel’s in Milwaukee.
- letting my older sister cut my bangs only one time.
- teaching me to sew doll clothes when I was 10.
- not letting me fear worms, frogs and spiders. I never believed you though, when you said snakes were more afraid of me, than I was of them.
- never allowing fighting amongst your children.
- introducing me to Perry Mason, The Wild, Wild West, and Mission Impossible.
- not allowing TV after school.
- insisting I go to church and Sunday School, all through high school.
- restricting pop to a single glass of 7-Up on Saturday nights.
- helping me move into and out of my forth floor dorm room, for three years.
- worrying and being angry when I got home too late.
- starting two small businesses.
- fixing my birthday meal of sloppy joes and angel food confetti cake every year.
- imposing a “personal suspension” when I mouthed off to a teacher.
- buying me beautiful wool fabric for the knickers and matching poncho I made in high school.
- holding, listening and loving me for 26 years. How I wish we’d had so, so many more. Thanks, Mom.

Thanks Pam – a great combination of the simple and important things she passed along to influence your life. I’m sorry you lost her while still so young. My Mother turns 99 this year and even with dementia, I still appreciate her and spend time with her almost every day.

Oh Pam! I have several ceramic items that I made in your basement with the help of your mom. They are the only “crafty” things I have ever made, and I treasure them and the memories that go with them. Your thank you list captures your mom’s strong and loving spirit perfectly.

Thanks, Pam. I basked in my children’s remembrances this weekend at Anna’s doctoral graduation, which we all attended. They made me feel very loved. The library card is the one that leaped out at me. My mother took us to the library every 2 weeks to get new books. What a world (among MANY) she opened up for me. thanks for your love <3
Pam Sievers says
Thank you, Phyllis, and job well done with Anna. Our mothers opened our eyes to so much life. Appreciate your comment.
