Here’s the thing about writing a book. You have to make quite an effort to sell it beyond friends and family, even if you’re traditionally published. I’ve done a couple of book festivals, and truthfully, selling the two books I’ve written isn’t my strong suit so I’m trying to be more creative.
And now, I’ve entered the world of craft fairs. Today was my first, at a nearby 55+ RV resort. To my left was a table of Avon products, and to my right, a table of jewelry. Ankle bracelets semed to be her best seller. Then there was the booth of dried gourmet dips and spreads, a woman selling Amway at another location, and several vendors selling microwave bowl koozies. Lots and lots of bowl koozies in different sizes, for different teams, and sets for all four seasons. How did we ever survive without these?
My favorite though? The bread guy. Rosemary and Italian focaccia, jalapeno and cheddar, and the bread that people stood in line for? A round loaf of sourdough.
I don’t know how I can compete with the bread guy when shoppers have limited funds so I’m rethinking my marketing strategies. “A book as comfortable as a warm slice of sourdough on a cool night.” Or “The Lone Jackass. Almost as spicey as jalapeno and cheddar bread.” Maybe I should just increase my price $10 and throw in a loaf of bread. I could also post a sign – “No inflation here. Prices have remained the same.”
Fortunately, I approach a sale like this with moderate expectations, and I did sell a handful of books. It could have been a better day had I not spent twice the amount I brought in. Such is the danger of craft fairs. But I had fun. It was a quick three-hour sale, lovely people, run very efficiently, but lots of older folks don’t read anymore, or they want large print. They were quick to tell me that when I’d start my sales pitch.
I have one more sale to do in December, truly a holiday craft fair. If only I’d bought that red and green jeweled ankle bracelet, I’d be ready. Instead, I’m looking for some sourdough essential oils I can use to attract more buyers.

Excellent report on your trip to the fair. I have helped my sister sell her books at a variety of craft and book fairs…and nearly always have had to buy a few things – and loved them! I think a book and a loaf of bread is inspired!!❤️❤️

Thanks, Beth. There is always so much to look at, if that’s all I’d do.

We did SOOO many craft fairs in CO and WY with my spouse’s woodworking products. So much fun and interesting ‘crafts.’ Best were summers when we could get homemade lemonade. Worst was set up next to fried turkey legs.
All you need is time (retired) and for us, ignoring husbands who told their wives that could make stuff cheaper. But they didn’t have equipment or time. LOL

I didn’t know you were craft fair experts. You just have to have a real upbeat attitude to make the most of it.

I will make you that red and green ankle bracelet. But who would see it. How about a red and green bracelet? Or some Christmas earrings!
Maybe we could try the focaccia recipe one day.
Glad you had a good day.

Of Al the suggestions, I’m up for the focaccia. How fun would that be! Thanks, Jan.

Your exploits are always entertaining. Love craft fairs but have to admit I’ve never purchased a book at one. Nor an ankle bracelet or sourdough. There’s always next time!
Pam Sievers says
Keep on stretching yourself, my friend. Many things to entice you beyond ankle bracelets and bread.

My friend Laura, the author, does lots of craft fairs too. My problem if I did that would also be spending my profits!
Pam Sievers says
I understand that all too well. And very nice of you to join your friend – I’m sure it makes the time go by faster for her.

Love reading your take on things- always makes me laugh with joy!! I agree, it is hard to not spend your profits with all the goodies around you- especially BREAD! I get it!! 💙
Pam Sievers says
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you liked the post.

Fun read! And a good idea to pair your book(s) with consumables–OR ankle bracelets!

I had to chuckle when you said that you spent more than you earned! Uh, that would be me, too! 😁
