I’m headed to my first Road Scholar experience next week, and I couldn’t be more excited. Are you familiar with the program? Their mission is to inspire adults to learn, discover and travel. It used to be called Elderhostel and I first became aware of the program 35 years ago when my aunt went on a couple of trips. They were of course, for old people. https://www.roadscholar.org/
Aging is a humbling experience, isn’t it?
- I own three types of jar-opening devices as my hands have lost some of their strength.
- One-on-one or in a small group in a quiet room, my hearing is perfect. Put me in a crowd with music or lots of chatter in the background, add poor acoustics, and you’ll get a lot of “huh?” from me.
- Every ache or ailment I have is now the result of… aging. It seems I could use an extended warranty on some body parts.
And now I’m going on a trip for old people. You get the idea.
I’m not complaining, really. I have many older friends and I know what’s waiting for me (and you do, too.) Of course, much depends on your diet and level of activity, your lifestyle and personal habits, and past history. Then add the need for healthy social contacts as we get older.
I won’t tell you where I fall in those categories, but I will tell you I am ready to learn, discover and travel, old or not. The heck with aging. Stay tuned, as I’ll be blogging about the experience.
So where are you traveling? My brother and sister-in-law love Roads Scholars travel.
National parks – check out the cover in the blog. I’m expecting a good time.
I am sure you will have a wonderful time Pam-please stay safe🙏🏼❤️
Thank you, Sharon. I’m sure I’ll have a great time and I promise, not to get too close to the bison.
Sending admiration and encouragement!!
That’s really special. Thank you.
Have a wonderful and safe trip,
Very excited for you both.

Thank you, Gloria. We’re really looking forward to it.
How exciting! Can’t wait to hear your impressions of this program, Pam.
Thanks, Kate. I’m expecting a great time.
Hope you have a wonderful time and that you learn a lot. Thanks for letting us know about this program. I look forward to your posts as you embark on your journey.
Thanks, Retta. They have programs around the world. I look forward to writing more about it
I’ve often wondered about these trips. I get their big brochure! Can’t wait to hear all about it
Thanks, Teri. It should be a great experience.
Terry and I did a wonderful Road Scholar trip to Croatia. We loved it although I must say… The other thing I’ve noticed in my older years is it’s a little more difficult to stay awake for lectures or presentations, even good ones! By the end of the trip, I was pretty tired and felt bad when my eyelids would not cooperate during their presentations!
Oh Cathy, this is so spot on and my fear. We’ll be a captive audience on the bus! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.
The parks are fabulous and you’re going to have a great time. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Road Scholars. Even though Mike & I won’t be with you it will be a memorable trip. Can’t wait to hear about it!
Think of how much fun if you were with us! I know we’ll have a great time. Thanks, my travel friend.
I’ve done one RS and have 2 later this year and 1 next year. Also have an American River Cruise in December.
Have wisdom, age and funds-will travel.
Wow, good for you. And what a scheule you have lined up. Enjoy!
As an elderly patient of mine once said after a long litany of ailments, “But you know, Dr Sievers, if you’re not getting older. . . something happened.” Have a good time in your trip.
Great point. Thanks, Steve.
Will be watching your posts and enjoying the trip vicariously as we are past that point. Do it while you physically can—and if you nod off now and then, think of it as a short refreshment.
Thanks, Joanne. I love the map theory and I’ll remember that!
The National Parks! Truly magnificent and awe-inspiring on so many levels. May the moments of enjoyment allow you to fully appreciate the beauty and amazement that reside in our world. You have the ability to keep your readers captivated, so I look forward to learning more about your foray into the power of nature.
Thank you for the kind words. They are truly magnificent.
